Could Hearing Loss Affect Your Lifespan?

Happy black people, embrace and support or trust, commitment and connection in marriage or retirement

A miracle cure that can help lengthen your lifespan is something pretty much everybody would want. That’s why you can find a great number of these miracle cures all over the internet promising longevity if you do this one trick. The healthcare community doesn’t endorse the vast majority of these supposed cures as they have no real medical basis.

However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything to positively impact your longevity. For instance, eating a healthy diet (particularly one low in sodium and saturated fats) or quitting smoking can substantially affect your expected lifespan.

This is also true of treating hearing loss by wearing hearing aids. That’s in line with recent research published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity, a multidisciplinary journal dedicated to healthy aging. So, can hearing aids help you have a longer life? There’s a strong possibility that it will according to this study.

Does hearing loss pose a threat to your health?

The connection between your hearing health and your general wellness is not necessarily new to researchers. For example, it has been well established that untreated hearing loss can considerably increase your risk of cognitive decline later in life.

These risks, however, are generally unknown by most people. They believe that hearing loss will only influence one facet of their lives and is a mere nuisance. But the truth is that hearing loss is more than a simple annoyance, especially when left untreated.

Is there a connection between hearing aids and longevity?

Usually, using hearing aids as often as possible will be the primary way to manage hearing loss. So does this mean that you can decrease your risk of early death by using hearing aids? According to this newest study, possibly. The study revealed that day-to-day hearing aid use was connected to a 24% decrease in mortality risk. The participants in this study, in other words, who wore their hearing aids, tended to live longer.

Hearing aid advantages

The research published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity isn’t necessarily conclusive proof that hearing aids will help you live longer (although the study does strongly suggest a connection). But we already have a large body of evidence about the many advantages of using hearing aids and this just adds to that body.

  • It will be easier to function in social situations. This will help your overall well-being by reducing your feelings of social separation.
  • Using your hearing aids can help enhance cognition. This means that you (and your brain) will probably be less fatigued and healthier over time.
  • You may also be more mindful of your surroundings. This can help prevent accidents, injuries, and mishaps.
  • Hearing aids can help you enjoy day-to-day moments with friends and family, from going out to eat with colleagues to asking your grandchildren about their school day.

These are improvements to your quality of life that you’ll experience each time you use your hearing aids. These are all practical reasons to use hearing aids to treat your hearing loss.
